Elder abuse and crimes against seniors are a growing concern as the “Boomer” population ages. Seniors are uniquely vulnerable to scammers and other financial criminals, as well as physical and mental abuse from caretakers.
For example, a lonely, home-bound senior with rheumatoid arthritis and knee pain might be all too willing to trust someone who paid attention to them. Our hypothetical senior might give away personal information without realizing it to an identity thief or even invite a criminal into their home. Seniors should be very skeptical about anyone who approaches them with a sweepstakes prize, investment opportunity or insurance policy, as those are frequent ways that fraudster target the elderly.
