The Top 5 Crimes Against Animals

We love our pets so much, and it’s universally tragic to hear about the stories in which animals aren’t treated the way they should be. However, awareness is important in preventing future crime against animals.

One day, I hope we can live in a world in which choosing the best healthy dry cat food or puppy pads is our biggest concern regarding animals. But right now, we still have a long way to go in protecting our favorite companions.

These are the top 5 crimes against animals that the US court system prosecutes today, according to the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

5. Bestiality

Shocking fact: bestiality is still not “expressly illegal” in all 50 states.

4. Abandonment

When an owner leaves an animal on their own after having them in their care, it’s abandonment. This happens a lot when people lose their jobs, homes, or otherwise fall upon hard times.

3. Animal fighting

In the United States, dog fighting and cock fighting are the most common forms of animal fighting. We even have a former NFL player, Michael Vick, who was arrested for dog fighting. He has since fought for legal action preventing the terrible practice.

2. Affirmative Acts of Abuse

This comprises any act of intentionally hurting an animal. It doesn’t matter if you own the animal or not.

1. Neglect

The failure to provide care for an animal so that it can survive is called neglect. This is the most common form of animal abuse in the country.
