Terrorism is Evolving, According to FBI

Many factors have contributed to the evolution of terrorism. The FBI claims international and domestic violent extremists have developed a massive presence on the internet through messaging platforms and online images, videos, and publications.

This is how the groups are recruiting and radicalizing people who are receptive to extremism.

Social media has also helped both international and domestic terror groups to gain unprecedented, virtual access to those living in the U.S. in an effort to enable homeland attacks. ISIS, in particular, encourages sympathizers to carry out simple attacks wherever they are located. ISIS’s message has resonated with supporters in the U.S. and abroad.

The FBI says it is important for people to protect themselves online as well as in person and to report any suspicious activity.

The simplest way to accomplish this is to:

  • Remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Refrain from oversharing personal information.
  • Say something if you see something: the insular nature of today’s violent extremists makes it difficult for law enforcement to identify and stop before they attack. Many times, a person’s family or friends are the first to notice a disconcerting change in behavior.
