Around 11 p.m. on Thursday a 911 dispatcher received a call from a boy who reported he was hiding in the bathroom of his home as his grandparents and uncle were beaten with a baseball bat. The grandfather and uncle were killed while the grandmother is in critical condition.
The home, which is in a gated community in Windermere, Florida, was being invaded by Ezekiel Emanuel Hopkins when the boy ran to the bathroom to hide and call 911.
The officers who responded to the scene were from the Windermere Police Department, the Ocoee PD, Oakland PD, and deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Hostage negotiators communicated with Hopkins through a closed door before entering the home.
Officers found that Hopkins, who appeared to have drunk bleach, was unresponsive in another bathroom. Hopkins was arrested and taken to a hospital.
This was not a targeted attack; Hopkins had driven his car through the community gate and allegedly crashed his car into some bushes next to the home. He then tried to steal a pick-up when he was confronted and had a physical altercation with one of the victims. Hopkins then entered the house and assaulted the other two.
