In Los Angeles, California, the leader of a megachurch was charged with child rape and human trafficking, months after a court dismissed the previous allegations due to prosecution errors.
Naason Garcia, a self-proclaimed apostle of La Luz del Mundo, was charged with three dozen felony counts. Susana Oaxaca and Alondra Ocampo were also charged.
According to prosecutors, the three committed sex crimes and produced child pornography involving five women and girls who were church members. The crimes took place from 20015 to 2018.
Garcia is the spiritual leader of La Luz del Mundo, which is Spanish for “The Light Of The World”. The church is a Guadalajara, Mexico-based evangelical Christian church that was founded by his grandfather and claims 5 million followers worldwide.
The re-filed charges accuses them of rape, forced oral copulation, fondling, forcing the girls to pose and send explicit photos, and to fondle each other sexually. Also included is human trafficking by procuring a child to engage in a lewd act, conspiracy to commit human trafficking for production of child pornography, child pornography, extortion of the victims, and unlawful sexual intercourse.
A fourth defendant, Azalea Melendez, is a fugitive at this time.
