Just because you can find it on store shelves, that doesn’t mean that it’s exactly safe.

In the world of household cleaning products, there are plenty of dangerous and toxic ingredients lurking behind those labels. This can be particularly troubling for people with respiratory conditions, or homes with pets or children.

The best way to avoid this? Whip up your own homemade, non-toxic household cleaners, of course.

Commercial cleaners might have excessively long ingredient labels full of things you can’t pronounce, but these easy-peasy recipes only need three ingredients a piece. This will be your easiest DIY project you’ve ever done!

Glass Cleaner

Ammonia might be good for cleaning, but it’s certainly not good for your health. Ammonia is, of course, a chemical, and it can have a negative impact on people and the environment. Inhalation of ammonia vapors can cause irritation to your eyes, nose, skin, throat, and respiratory tract.

Even low concentrations of ammonia can aggravate asthma. Ammonia cleaning solutions for industrial use can even contain high enough concentrations of ammonia to cause skin irritation and burns, or even permanent eye damage and blindness.

On top of that, accidental ingestion can cause corrosive damage to the mouth, throat, and stomach. So clearly, it’s not the best choice to keep around homes with children.

Abolish ammonia-based cleaners from your home. Instead, make your own glass cleaner that cleans just as great. With simple ingredients and a spray bottle of your choice, you can whip this cleaner up in seconds for super cheap.

  • 1 part distilled water
  • 1 part distilled white vinegar
  • 1 part rubbing alcohol

Pour equal parts distilled water, white vinegar, and rubbing alcohol together in a spray bottle, and shake it to mix. Optionally, you can add essential oil for added natural scent.

Wood Cleaner

Conventional wood and furniture polishes available on store shelves contain toxic ingredients. These products almost always contain synthetic fragrances, detergents, and ethanolamines. Just mopping your wood floors could cause breaking problems, headaches, nausea, itchy eyes, skin irritation, or even eye injuries.

If you’re hoping for a safer, non-toxic way to clean the wood surfaces in your home, you’re in luck. As it turns out, the wood surfaces in your home don’t actually need all those toxic ingredients to get clean. This DIY cleaner will get the job done.

  • 3 parts distilled water
  • 2 part distilled white vinegar
  • 1 part olive oil

Pour the distilled water, white vinegar, and olive oil into a spray bottle, and shake it to mix. Optionally, you can add essential oil for an added natural scent. Make sure you shake to mix thoroughly before use.

All-Purpose Cleaner

Of course, every home needs a good ol’ all-purpose cleaner. Unfortunately, just like glass cleaners and wood cleaners, our all-purpose cleaners also contain toxic chemicals that shouldn’t have any place in our homes — especially if you have pets or children. Many of these products can irritate the eyes and throat, cause headaches and other issues, or even cause cancer.

Instead of spending the money on toxic chemicals, create your own DIY all-purpose cleaner that’s all-natural.

  • 7 parts distilled water
  • 4 parts distilled white vinegar
  • 1 part castile soap
  • tea tree essential oil (optional)

Pour the distilled water, white vinegar, and castile soap into a spray bottle and shake well to mix. For added antibacterial properties — and an extra clean smell — add 20 to 30 drops of tea tree essential oil.
