It’s that time of year again: time to shop online for Christmas gifts to make your loved ones have a bright and cheerful holiday. However, some humbugs are always looking to spoil your holiday cheer: porch pirates who would steal your packages from right in front of your door.

Thankfully, there are a handful of precautions you can take to keep your shipments safe from thieves. Here are a few tips to help you avoid porch pirates this season and keep your packages safe and sound, right where they belong.

Sign for It

If you can afford to take time off work to wait for a pricey item to arrive in the mail, then consider authorizing a sign-off before the package can be dropped off on your doorstep. This is particularly helpful with expensive items like electronics and video games that are also lightweight and easy to steal.

This makes it so you can all but guarantee that you’ll get your hands on the actual item without leaving it on the porch for any amount of time for a thief to come along and steal it away from you.

PO Box

If your schedule doesn’t allow you to stay home during the day to sign for a package, you could instead get a PO box. This is a drop-off box in your local post office that keeps your packages for you and is under lock and key. You don’t have to worry about your items being stolen if they’re delivered to a PO box because they’re not being left unattended.

If you’re the kind of person who gets many packages delivered and you can’t afford to be home all the time to gather them up before thieves see them, a PO box is an ideal solution.

Security Camera

Thieves tend to steal when they think no one is watching. When they think people are looking at them, however, they tend to behave. One way to use this to your advantage is to install a security camera. Ironically, it doesn’t really even matter if you hook the camera up – it could just be a prop.

The perception of someone keeping an eye on the property is enough to deter all but the most determined thieves. Try installing a prop that looks like a security camera and see if that reduces the number of people sneaking around your property. You might be surprised at how effective this strategy can be!
